‘It’s a cattleman’s paradise to hear Jake tell it’
-Captain Woodrow F Call
The beginning flow of the head waters of the Little Missouri come from the lands just west of Devil’s Tower (traditionally called Bear Lodge Butte) and trickle down through Oshoto, as they build steam and draw from the land. Eventually developing into the mighty vitality of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. These powerful waterways have been the life blood of the nation and have been critical to the exploration, development, trade, commerce, and nourishment of the people and lands since the glaciers receded and exposed the dirt of North America to the sun again. Moisture and stormy weather received in Oshoto eventually feeds into the life sustaining waters of the 4th longest river in the world, who’s spirit is tied deeply to the strength of our great nation.
Oshoto /oh•show•tow/ is a cattle ranching community just to the northwest of us and a ways off the beaten path, established in the 1880’s during the height of the West Texas Trail.
An area that whispers ‘It’s a cattleman’s paradise to hear Jake tell it’ in the voice of Captain Call.
The story goes that the community gathered during a rain storm to come up with a name for the little town and threw their ideas in a hat. The winner- Sam Rathburn, a former Indian scout with the name OSHOTO- a Native American term for stormy weather.
Oshoto is the land of the hearty, the earthy, and the determined; it’s sacred ground in the shadow the the great Bear Lodge Butte. When moisture falls upon these lands it cleanses and clears, it energizes and is seen as approval from the spirits, ensuring crops will grow and gives all beings of the land the opportunity to flourish.
It makes perfect sense that just outside of Sundance, named for the Sun Dance ceremony of the native people, that there would be a Rain Dance community. It truly is all about balance and harmony, and there is no greater feeling of that than walking upon the lands of this region.
What’s in a name?
We’ve always believed EVERYTHING is in a Name
Names are conduits for light, connection, and one’s ultimate potential.
I also love studying and connecting with the spirituality of, well everything, but names and numbers too.
The spirit of this area led us to choose the name, but it also crosses the oceans and connects to the universal consciousness of other continents and peoples.
Across many religions the term Osho is significant- leader, enlightened one, seeker of truth, great humanitarian, hard worker, the blessed one on whom the sky showers flowers, a flowing ocean of wisdom and knowledge.
Oshoto is a blending of it all; our heart, our loves, our program, beliefs, ethics, and connection to the land.
He’s our history and our future.
Here’s a chance to add him to your future too
